A rap vocal is essentially a hybrid "percussion/lead-vox" element. A good rule of thumb is to treat the compression of a rap vocal the same way that you're treating the compression of your drums in the same track. Rappers (well, good ones, at least) add rhythmic lines to the trackwith their syllables. ![]() The level-evening effect that this vocal rider seems to apply is no good for a rap vocal. Hip hop, when it can, forsakes all other musical complexities in favor of intricate or powerful rhythm and groove. Rap vocals benefit more from a wide dynamic range than sung vocals. ![]()
